Kindness Party is also a celebration to

Help Glenmore Plaza residents secure housing repairs.

One of the reasons for Kindness Party is to demonstrate the power communities have when we come together. The residents of Glenmore Plaza have been organizing to collect repair needs from apartments across the building. They’ve shared these repair needs with NYCHA and organized this celebration of NYCHA completing many of these repairs. By coming to this party, you’ll stand in solidarity with your neighbors aspiring for better quality housing. We hope that this Kindness Party is just the start and that we can support other housing developments across Brownsville do the same, since so many apartments need attention across the neighborhood. Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to attend?

Nothing! The event is free and open to everyone in the community. In fact, we’ll have free food and giveaways as well!

What's the purpose of Kindness Party?

The purpose of this event is to come together. When we know our neighbors, we increase the chances that we make friends who we can count on for support. We find playmates for our children. We discover resources that can sustain us. We have fun.

We’re organizing this party for four reasons:

  1. To have fun! Let’s not bury the lead. This is a celebration of the neighborhood and everything beautiful within it. We will have games for kids, food and drink, music and dancing, art, and more.

  2. As a service to Brownsville. We believe that no one is going to take care of Brownsville like the people of Brownsville. But it’s hard to take care of our community if we don’t know the magic it has to offer. This simple event is a way to see so much of what Brownsville has to offer and what we can tap into. That’s why we’ve gotten partners to turn up to share resources and provide free food, drink, and resources.

  3. To get needed housing repairs done. Brownsville is the largest concentration of public housing developments in the United States, and a lot of people live in NYCHA buildings. Many of these buildings have not gotten the repairs that they need. We’re testing an approach of organizing a celebration to give NYCHA a strong reason for making repairs, this time at Glenmore Plaza. Glenmore residents came together and knocked on doors to collect repair needs for people from across the building. They compiled those repair needs into a spreadsheet and shared them with NYCHA, indicating that they were planning a celebration with the community and local press in three months’ time to honor the completion of the repairs. The process has been working! NYCHA has been working quickly to make repairs at Glenmore Plaza. As this approach proves successful, we’d like to expand it to serve other buildings in the neighborhood. You can read more in this blog post.

  4. To grow participation in GatherFor: Brownsville. We’re a 501c3 nonprofit that’s been trying a new approach in Brownsville. We organize neighbors into teams of 5-7 to support each other like family. These teams meet a few times a month to share stories, connect each other to resources, and more. We then link these “Neighbor Teams” to each other to build the neighborhood they want, since they have power together in community. Our current participants helped organize this Kindness Party and are interested in sharing their experience with others interested in learning more in the community.

Who's organizing this event?

Kindness Party is a collaboration between the Glenmore Plaza Residents’ Association and GatherFor: Brownsville. It was inspired by a friend of GatherFor, Jordan Reeves, who originally threw a neighborhood block party in Williamsburg called Kindness Party to build community trust and increase safety.
